Tucked deep in the rugged San Juan Mountains, Silverton, Colorado is one of my favorite mountain towns in the entire U.S. (and that’s saying something!). Once a booming mining town during Colorado’s gold and silver rushes, Silverton is now the gateway to some of the best adventures in the San Juans, as well as a National Historic Landmark district, full of colorful Victorian buildings and plenty of wild west charm. You won’t find any chain hotels or fast food restaurants here, just authentic Victorian saloons, dirt streets, and access to some of the best adventures in the region.
Whether you’re riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, hiking the jaw-dropping Ice Lakes Trail, or road-tripping the scenic Million Dollar Highway, Silverton is absolutely worth an overnight stay.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping straight into the Old West, the Grand Imperial Hotel is the place to stay. Built in 1883, this beautiful granite building is packed with history and charm — it’s where I stayed during my visit, and I can’t recommend it enough.
Every room feels like a step back in time, complete with antique furnishings and vintage décor. The rooms are cozy and comfortable (just don’t expect microwaves or big-chain hotel vibes). Downstairs, the on-site restaurant and old-west saloon serve up some of the best food and drinks in town.

2. The Avon

Best for: Budget travelers and pet owners
If you’re looking for cheap hotels in Silverton Colorado or a spot that welcomes your four-legged friend, The Avon is your best bet. This historic hotel-hostel hybrid is right downtown, with 14 rooms that range from private suites to hostel-style bunks.
At The Avon, dogs aren’t just allowed — they’re encouraged (no pet fee!). Built in 1904 and lovingly restored in 2017, The Avon also features a café on the first floor and sometimes hosts live music.
Shared baths are clean and newly renovated, and the atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming. This is one of the most pet-friendly hotels in Silverton Colorado and a great budget pick for adventurers.

3. The Wyman Hotel

Looking for something a little more chic and sophisticated? The Wyman Hotel combines Silverton’s mining-era history with modern luxury style and comfort. Located right on Silverton’s main street, this 1902 landmark building has been reimagined with what I can only describe as “Anthropologie-style” decor and all the amenities of a chic boutique hotel.
Each room includes luxury linens, Aesop bath products, and high-speed Wi-Fi. Grab a coffee from the Wyman’s café in the morning or unwind with a cocktail or wine at their stylish bar in the evening.

4. Teller House

Best for: History lovers and romantic getaways
Built in 1896 by a local brewery owner, the Teller House has been welcoming travelers to Silverton for over a century. With its authentic Victorian decor and prime downtown location, it’s easy to imagine the miners, merchants, and adventurers who once passed through its doors.
The Teller House offers just 8 rooms, some with private baths, some shared, and a cozy, old-fashioned charm.

5. The Frenchman Suites

Best for: Couples and travelers looking for modern comfort in a historic town
The Frenchman Suites are one of the newest boutique options in Silverton, blending the town’s rich history with modern design. Each of the three rooms is themed — The Movie Room, The Train Room, and The Silverton Room — and all include a kitchenette with a coffee maker, mini-fridge, and microwave.
Located right in the heart of downtown, this is the perfect base for exploring Silverton’s shops, museums, and trails while enjoying a little more privacy.

Set one block off Silverton’s main drag, the Silverton Lodge is a converted Victorian house offering six fully equipped suites — each with a kitchen, living area, and many with washer/dryers.
It’s pet-friendly (with a one-time fee), and the homey setup with full kitchens makes it ideal for families or longer stays. Each suite is unique, featuring vintage mining-era decor and modern touches for comfort.

Things to Do in Silverton, Colorado
While most visitors to Silverton are only passing through for the day, I totally recommend making this a home-base for exploring the area, or at least stop for the night on your epic Colorado road trip. Some of the favorite things to do in this area are:
- 🥾 Hike to Ice Lakes Basin – One of the most stunning alpine hikes in Colorado (and possibly the country). This is a very popular and decently strenuous trail, so you’ll want to get here at sunrise or earlier, especially if you’re trying to beat the afternoon thunderstorms during monsoon season, another point in favor of staying the night in nearby Silverton!
- 🚂 Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad – A scenic, historic train ride through the San Juan Mountains that allows you to access some remote trailheads like the Chicago Basin as well as the Colorado Trail and CDT.
- 🚙 Drive the Million Dollar Highway – Breathtaking mountain views between Silverton and Ouray make this breathtaking drive one of my favorite scenic drives in the world!
- ⛏️ One Hundred Gold Mine Tour – Go underground and experience an authentic gold mine with real mining equipment demonstrations.
- ⛷️ Go skiing or snowmobiling in winter – In winter, the San Juans transform into a paradise for serious powder enthusiasts. Beginners and families should head to Kendall Mountain, and experienced skiers to Silverton Mountain and into the backcountry.

From cheap, pet-friendly stays to elegant boutique hotels, Silverton is one of those rare mountain towns that still hasn’t been gentrified or overrun with chain hotels or bougie ski bunnies. It maintains its rustic and rough-and-ready Victorian Charm in the middle of one of my favorite outdoor adventure playgrounds in Colorado.
